The hub of traditional Bengali culture, North Kolkata aka Sutanuti was the abode of rich Bengali Babus and the Zamindars. This area contains a fascinatingly cosmopolitan blend of architectural forms (from Islamic to Baroque, from Victorian to Bengali) which made up the old world dwellings of the city's wealthier Bengalis, known as the Babus.
Our walk begins as we enter bustling lanes and by lanes of North Kolkata. Discover hidden architectural gems in the narrow by lanes of North Kolkata on a leisurely stroll. The hidden courtyards of merchants and old mansions with colonial inspired homes come to life in front of our eyes.
We walk pass the house of W.C. Bonerjee, an Indian barrister and the first president of Indian National Congress. We then pay a brief visit to the Anant Nath Deb Bazar & over 200 years old Twin Shiva Temples. We continue to get a glimpse of the Chhatu Babu Latu Babu Mansion, the abode for the first millionaire in Bengal during the British Raj and many more such historical buildings. We conclude our tour at the legendary Shovabazar Rajbari of Raja Nabakrishna Deb who was the first Talukdari of Sutanuti.
Anyone who wishes to feel the essence of authentic Bengali culture cannot afford to miss out on this walk.
